Back to WSR Gala 2002

As part of the Steam Gala the WSRA's workshops at Williton were open to visitors, their shed is adjacent to the Diesel and Electric Groups one, this line up of diesels was on show, with (left to right) D7523, D6566, D7017, D7018.  More photos and details are on Diesel and Electric Group.

Inside the WSRA's workshop was 6412 receiving attention with its smokebox door open.  This little pannier tank has been a long time on the WSR, it is only suitable for lighter trains, but the presence of a pannier tank is essential to the Great Western atmosphere of the line.

Definitely not ex Great Western are the frames and wheels of 34046 Braunton, an ex Southern Railway Bulleid West Country Class pacific.  The WSRA are restoring her with the intention of use both on the West Somerset and on specials on the mainline network.  when completed she will be dual braked so able to haul modern air braked stock as well as the WSR's vacuum braked stock.

While in many ways things Great Western are best to my mind, the Bulleid pacifics were exceptional locos, I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing Braunton in action.

A final view of the day, steam wasn't confined to rails, as can be seen in this view of a steam roller that was simmer quietly outside the WRSA's workshops.
